All successful enterprises undergo constant technology refresh in order that their support infrastructure continues to match business needs. These days, much of this infrastructure is used to deliver a suite of common services across the business - basic telephony, mobile telephony and desktop services are examples. Within larger organisations, Programme Management Offices (PMOs) are frequently established to ensure strategic projects, often involving complex supply arrangements, are delivered on time and within budget.
PMO resources are expensive, and under pressure to continually deliver change to the business. Spending post-project time and resource to ensure that the business benefits of such programmes are realised is rarely undertaken. Business pressures tend to dictate that Programme Management Office resources are moved on to new projects at the earliest opportunity.
After all, if there was an initial business case to undertake the project, surely that’s evidence enough that our business goals will be achieved?
As a consequence of its extensive experience with the rollout of large enterprise projects, The Logic Group has developed a suite of templates that can be used to capture the essence of the business gains that were originally expected by the client, and contrast those to the gains actually being experienced. As part of any major strategic programme, the client will usually have a Project Requirements Document (PRD) or similar. Some organisations might rely on weaker documentation sets like the Business Case, Business Requirements Document or Business Needs Analysis.
This documentation forms the start point for our process. We review it to clarify precisely what the initial goals of the project were, and then undertake a Current State Analysis to see where the enterprise is currently positioned against those initial goals. A Gap analysis quickly identifies areas of lost opportunity or outstanding activity that will require remediation if the full gains of the business case are to be realised.
In many instances, projects will change direction mid-flight, sometimes resulting in the loss of initial business benefits. We can help identify such losses and bring them back into the programme.
